3 Tips to Have Fun During Your Bioluminescent Kayaking Tour

Bioluminescence kayaking is not new in the world of outdoor experiences, but it is becoming increasingly popular now that people are eager to get out and about in nature after being cooped up in their homes for almost two years. No thanks to COVID – or the Wuhan virus.

Peak summer months are the best time to go on a bioluminescent kayak tour because this is when the glowing organisms in the waters are most active. You can only see them when the water is warm and it’s completely dark. As your kayak paddle creates ripples in the water, these organisms – dinoflagellates and comb jellies – start glimmering, allowing you to witness the spellbinding gleam of neon green and blue under the water.

To help you get the most out of your kayaking experience, here are some tips:

Dress the Part

When preparing for the tour, make sure your outfit doesn’t expose your skin too much. You want to keep yourself covered in case of mosquito bites and dress for water temperatures at night. Wear warm clothes (pants and long-sleeved shirts) and carry a change of clothes in a waterproof bag. Bring a bug spray or insect repellant as well.

Manage Your Expectations

You may have seen pictures of bioluminescence online before coming on the tour, but you should be ready to witness a different version in-person. This is because the nature of this glowing phenomenon largely depends on conditions like weather and even moonlight, and thus, it changes throughout the year.

If you want to increase your chances of watching the kind of awesomeness you’ve seen online, try to take a kayaking tour in the peak of summer.

Live It Before Snapping It

This is something we have seen some of our fellow adventurers do: you come across a bewitching natural phenomenon for the first time, so of course, you want to take out your camera and capture the moment.

And you absolutely should. But maybe you could enjoy the moment in real time first. You want to be able to look back at the pictures you took and feel the same exhilaration you did when you first saw all those dinoflagellates, schools of mullets, manatees, and dolphins around you.

Join Us to See Bioluminescence on the Space Coast

Here at Florida-Adventurer, we offer exciting kayaking tours in Titusville and Cocoa Beach to allow you to explore the natural beauty and diversity in the ecosystem. You can book a daytime, sunset, or nighttime kayaking tour with us; bioluminescence is only available during the night tours (9pm, 11pm, or 1am). We have even had dolphins and manatees swim up to our kayaks during these tours and they all look like they are actually glowing.

Our guides are extremely passionate about what they do and love informing and educating guests while hosting the tour. If this is your first time kayaking or even if you don’t know how to swim, we will take care of you. Before launching each tour, our guides run a safety orientation and make sure each guest has a safety vest and a flashlight. Our guests frequently range from 6 year olds to 60+, so you’ll be good hands.

Book your tour online or get in touch with us if you have any questions of concerns.
